1. Summit Meeting The Fifth Japan-Pacific Islands Forum Summit Meeting, a.k.a. PALM 5, was held on May 22 and 23, 2009 in Tomamu, Shimukappu, Hokkaido.
2. Background (1) In October 1997, Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto invited all the leaders of the PIF, and hosted Japan-SPF (South Pacific Forum, renamed PIF in October 2000) Summit Meeting to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the SPF members, and to cooperate toward the development of the region.
(2)So far, the Summit Meetings had been held four times; the first meeting in Tokyo in October 1997, the second in Miyazaki, April 2000 hosted by Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, the third and the fourth were both in Okinawa in May 2004 and 2006 hosted by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
3. Participants (1)Leaders and representatives of the governments of the 16 countries and regions will be invited by the Japanese Prime Minister, as follows;
Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu (In alphabetical order)
(2)The Summit was co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Japan and the Premier of Niue. |
